WORK IN PROGRESS AS OF JULY 14, 2023

NORTH CAROLINA CENSUS 1950

Unless specifically listing New England or other roots, all the families in North Carolina are Southern Putmans descending from Thomas Putnam who came here from England in 1647 and then died in 1648. His wife Dorothy couldn’t spell so the name got spelled the way it sounded, Putman. Then after the Revolutionary War, folks like Generals Israel and Rufus Putnam were famous and the folks in North Carolina said: “Hey, those are our uncles.” And the bulk changed their names to Putnam. But most all the Putnams here are on the Southern Line. My line stayed with Putman and so am I.
